Ce laboratoire est la maquette à l’échelle 1/3 d’une enceinte double paroi d’un bâtiment réacteur nucléaire. Bien que ce soit une maquette, elle est impressionnante par sa taille : 30 mètres de haut, 16m de diamètre. Il a fallu près de 5 000 tonnes de béton pour le construire et il est équipé de 700 capteurs et 2 km de fibre optique et câble coaxial. Ici, est étudié en accéléré le comportement du béton et de la structure de l’enceinte interne d’un bâtiment réacteur, notamment son vieillissement, sa déformation et son étanchéité.

Here we are in the 420 kV hall. Impressive, isn't it? In this immense hall, EDF’s teams subject high-voltage electrical installations to various constraints, such as lightning strikes and manoeuvring overvoltages, and observe how electrical installations are able to withstand pollution, extreme weather conditions and ageing. You will have noticed the enormous mushroom at the back of the laboratory. It is an arcing shield for preventing electrical interferences. Behind you are what are known as dividers and high-voltage capacities. The dividers are used to measure the voltages applied to equipment during the tests with a high degree of accuracy. The capacities are vital for adjusting the parameters used for the tests and trials.

Here we are in the Corrosion laboratory. One of its focuses involves studying how materials subjected to a mechanical constraint
within the primary medium of a nuclear reactor age.
Here at the FATCOR2 facility, we study the influence that the environment has on high-temperature and high-pressure fatigue processes. This laboratory investigates how fatigue cracks begin, and how they spread. It seeks to understand how the environment can reduce the service life of fatigued components. The aims of the study conducted are to help establish and check the ability of materials used in pressurised-water nuclear power plants to withstand fatigue. Thanks to this facility, we can also study stress corrosion cracking phenomena resulting from the mechanical stresses applied to the material.

Here we are in the battery laboratory. This is where we seek to understand, test and model mobile and stationary electricity storage solutions by investigating battery technology. To do this, we undertake performance, ageing and security tests at various scales, from cells up to battery packs.

Here we are in the “heat recovery in industry” laboratory where we are developing high-temperature heat pumps that are particularly suited to industrial clients whose heat requirements can be as high as 140°C. The idea behind these pumps involves using waste heat from factories, smoke and water, and increasing its calorific value before re-injecting it into the factory's energy system. It can then be reused at the appropriate temperature. Clever, don't you think? But that's not all. These heat pumps can reduce CO2 emissions by 90 to 95% compared with conventional heat production means. This laboratory is one of the only ones in Europe where such research is conducted.

In this part of the laboratory, teams can test electrical equipment subjected to up to 3300 MW, as well as short circuits, internal faults and power arcs. This is also where high-voltage circuit breakers can be tested – how they perform in normal circumstances, as well as during incidents.

Nous sommes ici dans le laboratoire Récupération de chaleur dans l'industrie, où l'on développe des pompes à chaleur haute température, particulièrement adaptées aux clients industriels, dont les besoins en chaleur peuvent atteindre 140 degrés. Le principe de ces pompes consiste à utiliser la chaleur fatale sortant de l'usine, fumée, eau, d'augmenter son pouvoir calorifique, puis de la réinjecter dans le système énergétique de l'usine qui peut la réutiliser à la température adéquate. Malin, n'est-ce pas ? Mais ce n'est pas tout. Ces pompes à chaleur permettent de limiter les émissions de CO₂ de 90 à 95% par rapport à des moyens de production thermique classiques. Ce laboratoire est l'un des seuls en Europe à proposer ces recherches.

Nous voici dans le hall 420 kilovolt. Impressionnant, n'est-ce pas ? Dans cet immense hall, les équipes d'EDF font subir différentes contraintes aux installations électriques haute tension, comme par exemple des chocs de foudre, des surtensions de manœuvres et observent comment les installations électriques résistent à la pollution, aux conditions climatiques extrêmes ou au vieillissement. Vous avez vu au fond du laboratoire ce gigantesque champignon. Il s'agit d'un pare effluve qui permet d'éviter les perturbations électriques. Derrière vous se trouve ce que l'on appelle des diviseurs et des capacités haute tension. Les diviseurs permettent de mesurer avec une grande précision les tensions appliquées au matériel durant les tests. Quant aux capacités, ce sont des éléments indispensables pour ajuster les paramètres des tests et essais.

Nous voici dans le laboratoire Corrosion dont l’une des missions est d’étudier le vieillissement des matériaux soumis à une contrainte mécanique dans l’environnement du milieu primaire des réacteurs nucléaires.
Ici, sur l’installation FATCOR2, nous étudions l’influence de l’environnement sur les processus de fatigue à haute température et haute pression. Ce laboratoire s'intéresse à l’amorçage des fissures de fatigue mais aussi à la propagation des fissures et cherche à comprendre comment l’environnement peut diminuer la durée de vie en fatigue. Les objectifs des essais réalisés sont de participer à établir et vérifier la codification de la tenue en fatigue des matériaux utilisés dans les centrales nucléaires à eau sous pression. Grâce à cette installation, nous pouvons également étudier les phénomènes de corrosion sous contrainte en fonction de la sollicitation mécanique appliquée sur le matériau.

Welcome to the Agri-PV demonstrator where solar energy production goes hand-in-hand with agricultural production. In an open field, tests are being conducted involving photovoltaic electricity production. Beneath raised and mobile panels, crops are being grown, including alfalfa, squash, wheat, potatoes, grass and colza. The aim is to test this innovative solution in order to find a win-win combination involving agricultural production and electricity production using photovoltaic panels. This will increase the share of renewable energies in the power mix.

Welcome to the Climatron – where our researchers know everything there is to know about heat pumps. They develop, test and optimise the thermal equipment in the building of the future, for the residential and tertiary sectors, in a variety of climate conditions – in dry temperatures ranging from -20° to 45°C, and in humid conditions. They are also able to model machines and buildings, and get their modellings and trials to interact with one another.

Welcome to the Cold Spray laboratory where our engineering and technician teams apply metallic deposits by spraying powder onto surfaces at extremely high speeds. This additive manufacturing process is used for repairing damaged parts and for creating coatings.

Welcome to the hydrogen platform. Low-carbon hydrogen plays a key role in decarbonising industry, as well as heavy mobility where direct electrification is difficult. Here, we are testing – at industrial scale – maturing electrolyser technologies and solutions for recovering hydrogen. These tests provide us with insights into how this equipment performs, so we can integrate it into today's and tomorrow's power grids.

Welcome to the lab’s high-capacity climate chamber. Here, we test the ability of large pieces of equipment and devices to withstand extreme weather conditions (ice and temperatures down to - 40°C, heat as high as 60°C with or without UV, humidity up to saturation point).

Welcome to the low-carbon connected home, an individual home spread over nearly 100 m² that is very similar to today’s new constructions. Built around a high-performance building fitted with low-carbon technologies, a heat pump, panel heaters, a thermodynamic water heater, photovoltaic panels, electric vehicle charging points, an electricity storage facility and connected objects, this home effectively leverages various sources of low-carbon energy. The low-carbon connected home is completely monitored and instrumented. It is used to develop a home that is both comfortable and economic for our customers, as well as responsible and civic-minded: it is low-carbon and high-performance in relation to the electricity grid. Dynamically controlling consumption with scenarios for controlling electricity usage and local energy production is the focus of this laboratory's field of study.
